If you love spending time outdoors, soaking up the sunshine, absorbing nature, and eating outside, then July is the month for you…its national picnic month!

The American Bakers’ Association founded National Picnic Month in 1952 and since then, the month of July has been celebrated as national picnic month. In the year 2000, the largest picnic ever was held in France to celebrate the new millennium’s first Bastille Day! It spanned 600 miles from coast to coast. Imagine how many sandwiches were eaten during that picnic!

Did you know that the word picnic is adopted from the French word pique-nique? The word was originally used to describe people having dinner in a restaurant where the guests brought their own wine. This tradition has continued into modern times with people bring their own food as a contribution to the picnic!

It looks like the weather is finally starting to brighten up after a long and drizzly summer so far, so, while the sunshine is here, we all need to get out there and make the most of it. Time for getting down to the park, feeling the soft grass between your toes, and snacking on some delicious treats! There really is no better moment to spend quality time with your family and friends after a long week at school or work. This month is all about getting your sandals on, packing that picnic basket, and enjoying the weather!

What kind of foods will you be taking to your picnics this summer? Will it be some nice refreshing fruits? Tasty sandwiches? Crisps? All of these are perfect foods for a picnic, but don’t forget to take lots of water with you to keep you cool and hydrated in the sun!
